{"id":6422,"date":"2020-06-05T09:07:22","date_gmt":"2020-06-05T09:07:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kdanmobile.com\/blog\/?p=6422"},"modified":"2023-08-24T01:49:44","modified_gmt":"2023-08-24T01:49:44","slug":"learning-effectively-from-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kdan.com\/blog\/learning-effectively-from-home","title":{"rendered":"5 Tips for Learning More Effectively from Home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>This is a guest post written by Dataquest.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Learning from home can be incredibly convenient, but it can also be challenging to make real progress without the structure and rigor provided by a classroom environment.<\/p>\n<p>Here are five science-based tips to increase your chances of accomplishing your goals when you\u2019re learning from home:<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Set Process Goals, Not Outcome Goals<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0749597896900011?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Studies<\/a>\u00a0found that people are less successful when they\u2019re focused on outcomes-based goals like \u201cI\u2019m going to become fluent in Chinese.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psych.nyu.edu\/gollwitzer\/09_Gollwitzer_Sheeran_Seifert_Michalski_When_Intentions_.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">One reason for that<\/a>\u00a0may be that when you share outcome-based goals like that one, people start to think of you as someone who speaks Chinese. You start to think of yourself that way, too. This gives you some sense of accomplishment before you\u2019ve actually achieved anything, which is detrimental to your long-term success.<\/p>\n<p>The study suggests that it\u2019s better to set and share process-based goals. For example, rather than setting a goal like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dataquest.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cbecoming a data scientist\u201d<\/a>\u00a0or \u201cbecoming fluent in Chinese,\u201d you might set a goal of \u201cstudying for an hour each day\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>This helps you stay focused on what you actually need to do. You also get a little burst of well-earned accomplishment every time you stick to the process goal you\u2019ve set.<\/p>\n<h2>Make Specific Plans<\/h2>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve set your process goal, it\u2019s time to set even more specific plans for your home learning. <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/epdf\/10.1348\/135910702169420\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Studies show<\/a>\u00a0that people who make specific plans are more likely to accomplish their goals.<\/p>\n<p>This is particularly important in the context of home learning since you\u2019re often surrounded by distractions. Specific plans can help you avoid making excuses.<\/p>\n<p>Sticking with the \u201clearn Chinese\u201d example, you might make a specific plan to study writing at 9:00 PM each night at your desk, and then have a half-hour call with your Chinese-speaking friend at 9:30 PM.<\/p>\n<p>Because you\u2019re learning at home, you should also have contingencies for when life gets in the way, like, \u201cIf I miss a session at night, I will wake up an hour early to practice reading and writing the next day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The more specific you can get with these plans the better. Develop writing skills without <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uprinting.com\/ultimate-plagiarism-guide.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plagiarism<\/a>, and find the right strategies toward the goal. Spend some time thinking about what you can really commit to \u2014 When will you study? Where? For how long?<\/p>\n<h2>Take Notes the Right Way<\/h2>\n<p>Taking notes while studying is an effective way to help retain information. But studies\u00a0also show\u00a0that not all notetaking is created equal. You often don\u2019t have the benefit of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jotform.com\/quiz-maker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">quizzes<\/a> and tests while learning from home to help assess progress.<\/p>\n<p>The available science suggests that there are three things you can do to make your note-taking more valuable:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Don\u2019t copy anything verbatim, and definitely don\u2019t copy paste. A big part of the cognitive value of <a href=\"https:\/\/appoftheday.downloadastro.com\/app\/noteledge-organize-notes-diary-audio-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">note-taking<\/a> is the mental work you do when you take something that someone else has said and express that idea in your own words in your notes.<\/li>\n<li>Review your notes regularly.<\/li>\n<li>Quiz yourself on your notes regularly, particularly if your self-study program doesn\u2019t include built-in quizzes or assessments.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6356\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kdan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/NL_teacher_02.png?resize=840%2C473&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"NL_teacher_02\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And don\u2019t forget&#8230;not everyone learns the same way! While writing things down or introducing pictures or graphs might work for visual learners, auditory learners would be better-suited to record audio notes or watch videos to retain more information. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kdan.com\/en\/noteledge?utm_source=Blog&amp;utm_campaign=ENBlog_5TipsLearnFromHome_202006&amp;utm_medium=ENBlog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NoteLedge<\/a>\u00a0is a great home learning tool because it supports all learning types by letting you create multimedia notes that incorporate typed or handwritten annotations, photos, videos, audio recordings, web clips, and more.<\/p>\n<h2>Share Your Goals \u2014 But Maybe Not on Social Media<\/h2>\n<p>It can be tempting to start posting and reading a new learning challenge on social media. But the science suggests this may not be the best idea.<\/p>\n<p>As mentioned previously, sharing an \u201cidentity goal\u201d like, \u201cI\u2019m going to become a fluent Chinese speaker\u201d publicly can work against you &#8211; sapping your motivation by giving a sense of accomplishment before you\u2019ve succeeded.<\/p>\n<p>Studies have also shown that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/09645290210131656\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">seeing competition<\/a>\u00a0can be demotivating and that making yourself publicly accountable for a goal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gwern.net\/docs\/sunkcosts\/1992-simonson.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">can give you tunnel vision<\/a>\u00a0and prevent out-of-the-box thinking.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007%2Fs13142-012-0183-y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a different study<\/a>\u00a0did find that engaging with the Twitter community was helpful for weight loss. How helpful or harmful social sharing might be could depend on how supportive and competitive the particular community you\u2019re engaging with is.<\/p>\n<p>The science about sharing your goals with real-world friends seems a bit clearer. \uff37hile sharing goals on social media can be demotivating,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.goalband.co.uk\/uploads\/1\/0\/6\/5\/10653372\/strategies_for_achieving_goals_gail_matthews_dominican_university_of_california.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sharing goals with a friend can help<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s especially true if you can find a cooperative friend who\u2019s willing to tailor their feedback to your needs. Studies suggest that just like how \u201cprocess goals\u201d are better than \u201coutcome goals,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reed.edu\/motivation\/docs\/Haimovitz_Corpus_2011.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cprocess praise\u201d is preferable, too<\/a>. If you can coach your friend to give you feedback like, \u201cWow, you worked hard on that,\u201d as opposed to, \u201cperson praise,\u201d like, \u201cWow, you\u2019re so smart,\u201d you\u2019ll be off to a great start.<\/p>\n<p>If your friend is really cooperative, you can also ask them to shift the focus of their feedback over the course of your studies. <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/j.1751-9004.2010.00285.x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Researchers found<\/a>\u00a0that people tend to respond best to positive feedback early in your studies when you need encouragement. Negative feedback then becomes more helpful later on your learning journey to prevent you from becoming complacent.<\/p>\n<h2>Try Teaching Someone Else<\/h2>\n<p>One of the best ways to figure out how well you\u2019ve learned something is to try teaching or explaining it to someone else. This process will quickly highlight areas of the material that you don\u2019t fully grasp.<\/p>\n<p>In the classroom, this often happens naturally as students converse with each other about how to solve a particular math problem or how to approach an essay assignment. But when you\u2019re learning from home, it\u2019s a bit trickier to teach &#8211; particularly if you don\u2019t have a friend or family member who\u2019s interested in learning what you\u2019re studying.<\/p>\n<p>That doesn\u2019t mean you can\u2019t teach from home. One great idea is to try <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kdan.com\/en\/writeon-video?utm_source=Blog&amp;utm_campaign=ENBlog_5TipsLearnFromHome_202006&amp;utm_medium=ENBlog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">making a video<\/a>\u00a0to teach others what you\u2019re learning. A <a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/record\/2016-15112-009\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent study<\/a> has shown that making a teaching video can actually enhance your learning more than re-studying! Participants can record a teaching moment and combine all the clips into a group video to share with the community.<\/p>\n<p>Employing just one of these tips can enhance your home learning experience.
